So you know your James Bond watches then? Those Rolexes, the Seikos, the Hamiltons, that Girard-Perregaux and all those Omegas might all be familiar, but one lucky collector struck gold by picking up the modified Breitling Top Timer that Bond wore as a Geiger-counter in Thunderball at a car-boot sale.
Christies have put an estimate of £40-60,000 on the watch, which was modified by the film-maker’s art department and was the first 'Q Branch' watch given to Bond – the Geiger-counter function was to help locate the nuclear warheads stolen by SPECTRE. It goes under the hammer at Christie's June 26th Pop Culture sale in South Kensington.
Apparently the watch was acquired for a bare £25. Some car-boot find! Christies were not very forthcoming on exactly how the watch was identified and at what stage, saying only that the purchase was made “some years ago”. Is this the truth? is the truth being deliberately obscured? Grounds for suspecting evil mastermind money-laundering? Probably not.
