The High Weald National Landscape in collaboration with the Shooting and Hunting Academy, is pleased to announce the availability of fully funded places for the Proficient Deer Stalking Certificate (PDS) Levels 1 and 2. This initiative, supported by Defra, is a significant opportunity for individuals to gain accredited qualifications in deer management.
Please Note: The application process will close on 13 September, and will only be granted to individuals who work or live in the High Weald Area. interested parties are urged to register their interest without delay.
The Importance of Deer Management in the High Weald
Effective management of fallow deer in the High Weald is critical for maintaining environmental balance, preserving biodiversity, and safeguarding agricultural practices. Overpopulation of deer can lead to substantial damage to crops, woodlands, and an increase in traffic collisions, all of which pose risks to both human safety and the health of the deer population. Through responsible deer management, these challenges can be mitigated helping to ensure the health of the environment and of the deer themselves.
The High Weald National Landscape is offering fully funded training opportunities for both beginner and experienced deer stalkers and will be delivered by The Shooting and Hunting Academy, which is accredited by LANTRA and UKRS.
Proficient Deer Stalking Certificate Level 1 (PDS1):
There are funded places are available for individuals interested in beginning their training in deer management. The PDS1 course is designed to provide comprehensive instruction in the fundamentals of deer stalking, including safety, deer identification, legal requirements, and best practices. The course comprises an online theoretical component and a practical shooting assessment. Participants are required to complete their training by 31 January 2025.
Proficient Deer Stalking Certificate Level 2 (PDS2):
For those who have already attained the PDS1 or DSC1 certification and have experience in culling a minimum of 10 deer, funded places are available for the PDS2 course. This advanced training includes online instruction and two witnessed stalks, offering participants hands-on experience and deeper insights into effective deer management practices. Like the PDS1, this course must be completed by 31 January 2025.
Application Details
We encourage interested individuals to apply promptly, as places are limited. If demand exceeds availability, priority will be given as follows:
- PDS1: Priority will be given to female applicants and individuals aged 20-40.
- PDS2: Priority will be given to experienced stalkers with permissions in the High Weald who cull approximately 50 or more fallow deer per year.
