May - A Look Ahead at Deer Stalking Across the UK

Make the most of your Roebuck stalking this season, Peter Jones reveals some exciting opportunities.

May is predominantly about the native and much-loved Roebuck. Not simply because all other deer, save Muntjac, are protected, but also because second only to the rut, which is in late July/early August, there is no better time of the year to be stalking this elegant and attractive deer.

The reason why May is so much fun is two-fold. Firstly, the deer are extremely active, as they jostle to establish a territory. In this single-minded pursuit of a patch of their own, the bucks are both active and distracted, two important traits that play into the hands of the hunter.

The second reason why May is so important to stalkers, is that the Roebuck has shed both his winter coat and the ‘tatters’ of velvet from his antlers. The contrast of glossy red coat against the surrounding lush, emerald green countryside is an image not to be missed.

Roebuck stalking is one of the finest field sports that the UK has to offer and May is a superb time to set out in pursuit.

Whilst on the subject of Roebuck stalking, I have two important announcements. The first comes from ‘County Deer Stalking’s’ official members club the ‘Capreolus Club’, which has launched ‘Capreolus Club PLUS’, a scheme that is designed to offer suitably experienced members, the opportunity to simply ‘Book & Go Stalking’ unaccompanied for Roe and Fallow with just 24hrs notice, throughout the year, over thousands of acres of beautiful, rolling countryside. For details of the scheme follow this link: capreolus-club-plus

For those who prefer accompanied stalking with a guide, my second announcement is, that at ‘County Deer Stalking’, we have also secured deer stalking for Roe and Muntjac over 4000 acres of Suffolk countryside…countryside that is teeming with deer!

Whether you prefer to stalk accompanied with a qualified guide or if you’d rather stalk on your own, either way there are plenty of opportunities to hunt Roebuck this coming season.
