Deer Stalkers Almanac - August 2020

Once again, I find myself penning these lines during the height of the summer Roe rut, one of my favourite and busiest times of year.

The weather has been perfect for Roe calling this year and we have taken a number of excellent Roebuck which have been unable to resist my allure with the call!

What’s more, we have been doing so over some beautiful new ground in the Surrey Hills where we have secured additional stalking, not just for guided stalking, but also for our Capreolus Club Deer Stalking Syndicate.

The rut in all likelihood will continue into August in the south, and in the north of the country and Scotland won’t even have gotten started until the start of August, by which time the males of the herding species, Red, Fallow and Sika will also be in season across the whole of the UK.

For these reasons August is a special time of year and marks a resumption of increased levels of activity amongst stalkers of most of the UK’s deer species.

Make the most of the coming weeks though, because once the Roe rut is over, the Roe will seemingly vanish back into the woods and hedgerows for a month or two for some rest and recuperation until at least October, by which time the rut for the larger species commences.

There are exciting times ahead and the best of the year’s deer stalking is ahead of us.

At County Deer Stalking and the Capreolus Club we are delighted to have taken on a further 1,000 acres of grounds near Guildford in Surrey for our Capreolus Club PLUS deer stalking syndicate and for guided stalking.
